Behavioral Policy

It is normal with groups of children, whether in a day care setting or among friends, to occasionally experience problems of children biting, or otherwise hurting other each other. Although biting is not uncommon among preschool children in group care, it can be upsetting to the parents and the care givers, as well as painful to the child involved.

The staff at CEC has found that the problem usually is handled successfully through positive guidance techniques. We are particularly concerned about the child who is hurt, and provide immediate comfort and, if needed, first aid. Careful supervision and observation of the child with the inappropriate behavior helps prevent future incidents and provides care givers with clues regarding ways to help the biting child express him or herself in more positive ways.

In situations where one child repeatedly hurts other children, and the child persists in this behavior despite the best combined efforts of staff and parents, it may become necessary to ask parents to make other child care arrangements. It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of all the children at CEC. We recognize that even the best program cannot solve every problem or meet the needs of every child.

Please feel free to refer to our informational sheet that describes how we handle common behavioral situations with children.
